The Weekend Missions Experience

Weekend Missions, Inc. is not a huge missions organization sending fund raisers to churches all over the country trying to raise money to keep missionaries in the field. Instead, Weekend Missions is simply a group of Christians devoted to sharing a missions experience with other believers. Trips last about two and a half days (Friday Noon to Sunday), the cost to participate is very low, and the experience could very well change your life!

Weekend Missions, Inc. (an Arizona Non-Profit Corporation) is currently involved in dozens of projects in Rocky Point, Mexico ... a favorite getaway for people all over Arizona, Southern California, and other nearby states. While there are million dollar condos all around Rocky Point, the sleepy little fishing village is itself very poor.

SLUM1

Many of the citizens of Rocky Point live in poverty, and most exist in hovels they call home, often put together with leftover building materials. Indoor plumbing is a luxury for most homes, and electricity is often spotty or non-existent. Air conditioning is rare, and many homes lack a refrigerator. Very few have washers and dryers.

The goal of Weekend Missions is to share the love of Christ with anyone who will listen, to minister to the needs of as many as possible, and to consider worthy projects to further the work of those who consider Rocky Point a full time mission project.

Sometimes a Weekend Missions project is as simple as painting a wall!

Weekend Mission volunteers are not necessarily trained in a specific trade, although we welcome those who are specialists at plumbing, electrical, or carpentry. Those without specific skills will be teamed with a project manager, or someone specializing in a necessary trade.

Housing accomodations for Weekend Mission volunteers range from shared space in a condo right on the beach to homes, mobile homes, or RVs that are made available for specific Weekend Missions projects. While Weekend Missions cannot guarantee a specific lodging location for any given volunteer, consideration is given for those with special needs.

Those who drive a vehicle into Mexico are required to purchase Mexican Insurance (it is the law in Mexico just like here in the United States). Even if American insurance covers travel into Mexico, it is wise to purchase a Mexican Insurance policy.

The volunteer (left) is digging a trench for a new water line at the home of the director of the Rocky Point Women’s Shelter.

Imagine living in a home with very little running water! Later, Weekend Missions hopes to complete a bathroom at this home.

Across town (right photo), another volunteer helps to complete a new room at the home of a needy resident.

While building requirements in Rocky Point are very informal, Weekend Mission volunteers make the best use of American style building standards. Recipients are always very grateful for the help we provide.

One of Rocky Point’s community centers needed a rusty iron fence rehabilitated (left photo). Weekend Mission volunteers scraped and prepared the fence and applied fresh coats of white paint. Even the kids pitched in to help get the job done.

At right, another community center gets fresh paint on the playground equipment Neighborhood kids watched with big smiles while the work was completed.

The Weekend Missions experience is leaving daily life behind, and concentrating on letting God direct your time and thoughts as you help those most in need. No hard and fast deadlines, or designated schedules to observe ... just service to those who have less than you do!
