A few simple notes about travel to and from Rocky Point (Mexico)

insurancedesk1

First, you must have Mexican liability insurance. It’s not just a good idea, it is the law. There are many places to purchase this insurance online, and print the policy before you leave. Note that some policies are pretty bare, and you are the person who “guesses” the amount of coverage you need. For example, you may be asked to estimate the value of your vehicle. Guess high rather than guessing low.

Some policies include medical coverage, even Care Flight (or similar) if needed. While traveling, observe Mexican speed limits, which are listed in kilometers per hour rather than miles per hour. Mexican law enforcement of speed limits is not as tight as in the United States, but they do enfoce the speed limits. A simple way to convert speed limits is: divide by 8, then multiply by five to change kilometers to miles per hour. 90 kph divided by 8=11. then multiplied by 5=55 miles per hour.

Weekend Missions, Inc. does not endorse any specific insurance agency (click here to Google a list of companies) but one of the oldest and largest is Sanborn Insurance. Rates are nearly always the same regardless of the company. Click here to see the Sanborn site.

Next, you must have identification that meets current requirements. The rules for proper identification are in the process of being changed and updated, so it is important to stay up to date on the changes as they occur.

At some point, you will have to have a passport, and it could take 4-6 weeks to obtain one. You will be required to present your original birth certificate (NOTE: they keep the birth certificate while processing your passport) or a certified copy.

Weekend Missions, Inc. does not endorse any online source of birth certificates, but a reliable source which we have used in the past is VitalCheck. Costs are roughly the same regardless of the company you use. Service is generally much faster than trying to obtain the document on your own from the state registrar of documents (or whatever the agency is called).
