Many think of Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) as a great vacation spot, spring break getaway, or simply as the nearest beach to Phoenix and surrounding areas. In truth, Rocky Point has an impressive role in the history of both the United States and Mexico.
At one point, the area now known as “Bird Island” played a prominent role in military history. While the island is today home for thousands of sea lions and birds (thus the name “Bird Island”), in decades past, the island was invaluable to the military and served as the base for radio communications in the area. Some of the equipment is still visible to visitors of “Bird Island.”
In more recent history, Rocky Point has supported a thriving fishing industry. Over time, however, the waters surrounding Rocky Point have been “over-fished” and the government ordered fishing suspended or even stopped for periods of time. Many fishing boats have been permanently retired as a result. The loss of these fishing jobs is one of the reasons that Rocky Point is now home to hundreds of at-risk children.
